October 26th, 1999 Graduation Ceremonies for Popular Republic of China's judges at Université de Montréal

Twelve Chinese judges have now completed their training session offered by the Faculty of Law of Université de Montréal, in partnership with McGill University and the Canadian Institute for the Administration of Justice. During their 10 month stay, they received special training preparing them for a new justice system adapted to the new reality of global market economy. "Thanks to a unique combination of expertise, the three Montreal institutions working with our legal system, have offered them a novel training program, especially tailored for the future Chinese magistrates. This project is innovative and will contribute significantly to instituting a legal state in China", declared Jacques Frémont, director of the magistrates' training program. CIDA funded this training project, with four millions dollars over three years, following a meeting between Prime Minister Jean Chrétien and the Chinese Premier Li Peng that took place during the 1994 Team Canada tour of Asia.
