A
great kick-off for A World of Projects
$66
MILLION CONTRIBUTION TO HELP FULFIL THE DREAM SHARED BY THE UNIVERSITÉ
DE MONTRÉAL, HEC AND THE POLYTECHNIQUE
The
business community has made a spectacular contribution to A World
of Projects, the campaign designed to make the Université de Montréal,
the École des Hautes Études Commerciales and the École Polytechnique
into Quebec's world-class university complex. The J.-A. Bombardier
Foundation, Hydro-Québec and the Succession J.A. de Sève have each
donated $12 million to the campaign. Along with funds raised during
the past few months, these donations have enabled the three institutions
to start their campaign off with a bang by announcing that $66 million
is already in the bank.
Paul Desmarais of the Power Corporation of Canada is serving as
honorary president of the campaign, whose goal is to raise $125
million. André Caillé, president of Hydro-Québec, and Robert E.
Brown, president and CEO of Bombardier Inc., are the campaign's
co-presidents.
The campaign will totally reconfigure the campus, and open the door
to 150 advanced research and development projects, including seven
that will involve the three institutions, 40 that bring together
the three institutions and other bodies on campus, and 100 others
proposed by each of the partners.
A
new campaign: A World of Projects
$125
MILLION FOR A WORLD-CLASS UNIVERSITY COMPLEX
If Quebec is to have a world-class university complex,
it will be created by the Université de Montréal, École des Hautes
Études Commerciales and École Polytechnique. This message was delivered
loud and clear today by the honorary president of the campaign A
World of Projects, Paul Desmarais of the Power Corporation of Canada,
and co-presidents André Caillé and Robert E. Brown, president of
Hydro-Québec and president and CEO of Bombardier Inc. respectively.
This campaign will totally reconfigure Montreal's largest campus,
according to Robert Lacroix, rector of UdeM, Jean-Marie Toulouse,
director of HEC, and Réjean Plamondon, general director of the Polytechnique.
This
joint campaign, whose theme is A World of Projects, will take the
form of 150 specific high-level R&D projects, including seven major
projects that will create extensive synergies and require a firm
commitment from the three institutions, about 40 joint interdisciplinary
projects that bring together institutions and other bodies on campus
(schools, faculties, departments etc.), as well as about 100 special
projects proposed by each of the partners.
The campaign cabinet will consist of some of Quebec's most influential
business people, who will rally the community behind the project
in order to raise the $125 million needed to realize this vision
for the future.
Global
positioning
The Université de Montréal, École des Hautes Études Commerciales
and École Polytechnique today form one of the leading scientific
centres in North America, according to the heads of the three institutions.
The main goal they are currently pursuing is to position the university
complex on the world stage, where major societal changes are taking
place and where the top researchers and professors can be hired.

150
PROJECTS DEVELOPED BY THE ACADEMIC COMMUNITY AND DRIVEN BY AN REMARKABLE
SPIRIT OF INNOVATION
No fewer than $125 million will be invested in some 150 projects
developed by the academic community. These projects will help meet
new requirements in furthering knowledge in a variety of fields
and contribute to reinventing methods for knowledge transfer.
Major
synergistic projects
Seven major synergistic projects will form the thrust of this campaign
by the three institutions. They will have a profound effect on the
way teaching and research are conducted, by breaking down the usual
interdisciplinary and organizational boundaries.
-
Creation of the Réseau d'étude et d'aide à la gestion intégrée
des risques (RÉAGIR), which will bring together researchers
from various disciplines in order to make the organizations better
able to manage risks, for example, in the areas of environment,
human health and civil engineering, or in finance, insurance and
technologies.
-
Establishment of a network of e-commerce chairs. Three
chairs will be set up, devoted to developing new technologies
and business-to-business links, developing new technological platforms
and analyzing factors in introducing and developing e-commerce.
- Creation
of a research and study group for data processing, which
will work on creating new algorithms and improving existing algorithms
to optimize methods of processing large amounts of data.
- Creation
of the Technopole, carrefour des sciences et de la technologie,
which will serve for the development and upgrading of research,
and foster partnerships with the government and the private sector,
for the construction of new buildings for the complex.
- Creation
of the Maison des technologies de formation et d'apprentissage,
where the new information and telecommunications technologies
will be used to develop tools and methods for teaching and learning
the sciences, mathematics, engineering, management sciences and
related disciplines.
- Introduction
of two special scholarship funds, one to encourage mobility
among undergraduates in the context of greater openness to the
world, and another to attract and retain the best master's and
Ph.D. students.
Joint
projects
About 40 joint projects will also be set up as part of A World of
Projects. These will be interdisciplinary projects involving schools,
faculties, departments and research centres on campus to create
centres of excellence that will foster the training of up-and-coming
scientists and professionals.
Specific projects
Lastly, the three institutions also have plans for about 100 projects
to ensure that they remain at the leading edge of excellence in
their respective fields.
A
World of Projects: breaking down the barriers
THE
BUSINESS COMMUNITY RALLIES TO SUPPORT THE CREATION OF A WORLD-CLASS
UNIVERSITY COMPLEX IN QUEBEC
Robert Lacroix,
rector of the Université de Montréal, Jean?Marie Toulouse, director
of the École des Hautes Études Commerciales, and Réjean Plamondon,
general director of the École Polytechnique, along with Paul Desmarais
of Power Corporation of Canada, honorary president of the campaign
A World of Projects, and campaign co-presidents André Caillé and
Robert E. Brown, president of Hydro-Québec, and president and CEO
of Bombardier Inc. respectively, today shared with their guests
their vision for the future of Montreal's university complex. Following
are excerpts from their speeches.
Robert Lacroix
Rector, Université de Montréal
"Launching A World of Projects is nothing less than launching an
ambitious $125 million program, whose goal is to create a world-class
university complex in Quebec with the École des Hautes Études Commerciales,
the École Polytechnique and the Université de Montréal."
"We are very
proud to tell you today that A World of Projects is our entire community's
concern. When I say entire, I mean professors, researchers, students,
and current and former employees of the complex, who have each contributed
in their own way to this incredible effort. I would like to acknowledge
their contribution publicly and express my heartfelt thanks."
Jean-Marie
Toulouse
Director, École des Hautes Études Commerciales de Montréal
"These various projects will deal with extremely timely issues that
managers have to face every day-issues of leadership, energy management,
organizational performance management, management of multinational
companies and the functioning of boards of directors."
"A World of
Projects will provide a new burst of energy to the École des HEC
and its long-standing mission: to be a leading world-calibre business
school focusing on the mastery of new technologies and international
partnerships."
Réjean Plamondon
Director general, École Polytechnique de Montréal
"I have the utmost confidence in our ability to tackle these challenges.
Every year, the Polytechnique signs 300 contracts with industry
and governments, for a total value of over $11 million."
Our competencies
and our experience in partnerships are two indisputable assets that
will enable us to make a strong contribution to A World of Projects."
Paul Desmarais
Power Corporation of Canada
Honorary President, A World of Projects
"In this context, the importance of the university is obvious. While
post-secondary education, research and development have always made
a major contribution to societal development, they have crossed
a new threshold. They are now vital and indispensable components
of our evolution. And they are also major competitive factors in
development and positioning, between both companies and countries-and
even entire continents."
André Caillé
Hydro-Québec
Campaign Co-president
I accepted this co-presidency because I am convinced of the importance
of taking part in a society-wide project that will help give university
teaching and research in Quebec its full due, and especially because
I firmly believe that this project represents the only real possibility
we have of creating a world-class French-language university complex
here in Montreal."
"In a world
where the quest for excellence is imperative, young people are our
brightest hope. At the Université de Montréal, HEC and Polytechnique,
there are 46,000 of these young people, each with their own dream.
It is our responsibility to help them make these dreams come true".
Robert E.
Brown
Bombardier Inc.
Campaign Co-president
Our society is facing one of the greatest challenges of all time:
the acquisition and development of new knowledge and skills. The
Université de Montréal, HEC and Polytechnique are challenging us
to grow with them and place knowledge and skills at the forefront
of our society."
